I want to get your 5 favorite shows from 77. I'm going to pick random years and check out your faves. Here are mine in chronological order.

1.5-4-77
2.5-25-77
3.6-9-77
4.11-2-77
5.12-29-77

There are many great shows from 77 and it's hard to narrow it down to 5, but these are my 5 favorites at the moment.

I'll keep it simple and just do three:

6-7
6-8
6-9

Damn I hope that's the complete run that deadnetstore meant when they coyly promised more complete runs. When's the last time you listened to the Terrapin > Dew from 6-7? Easily beats the overrated Cornell Dew and stands toe-to-toe with Cow Palace 76.

Lou,

6-9 is probably my 2nd favorite show of the year, but 6-7 is a great one, and way underrated. A perfect Terrapin into a Cornell-like Dew is the way I remember it. Maybe the best FOTD of the year, and a great UJB.

Do you know if they have the entire run in the vault?

I've wondered about whether they taped it in 2-track or 16-track. I'm guessing 2-track, but so was Winterland 1973 and that sounds fine. I have no idea whether the tapes have survived. I certainly hope so.

Well I hafta agree about 4/23 - Just an outstanding show really with top notch music. So here are my five

2-26
4-23
5-7
6-9
10-29

Of course there are some others in there but I keep going back to these for their raw musicianship. (that's a big boat that carries the musicians away).

I would have included Tuscaloosa as well, wonderful show, but it's hard to choose 5 from 77, at least for me, so many great ones.

I include some that are not mentioned so often, except of course:10-29!

4-30 is outstanding
10-16
12-30

10/2/77- Tremendous "Scarlet>Fire" and a somewhat unusual (for '77) set list.

10/29/77- From the very first note, this show is delivered at an absolutely off-the-charts energy level, even by the standards of this tremendous year

12/29/77- The "China Cat" breakout coming out of that quiet corner of "Playin'" is one of my 2-3 favorite moments of the post-hiatus years

11/6/77- Unusually powerful readings of normally standard first-set tunes complement the usual '77 second set brilliance

4/23/77- This is another one that really hits the ground running and never lets up

You may notice I have nothing from May here, but there are several that just missed this list: 5/9, 5/13, 5/22, 5/25.
I suppose 5/8 would round out the bottom of the top 10 here, but although I think it does contain possibly the best "Morning Dew" ever and a truly epic "Scarlet>Fire", I do not think that Cornell AS A WHOLE SHOW rises above those I have mentioned above.

A favorite topic. Best year ever. 5 is tough. But I'm surprised at least one person hasn't mentioned #3 on this list (in orderof preference).

1. 10/29/77 (Also my vote for Best Show Ever) Here's my review/reason why if anyone cares: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1977-10-29.sbd.miller.92085.sbeok.flac16

2. 4/23/77 (ridiculous set list and pure power playing. You get a ripping Scarlet>Fire PLUS a Help>Slip>Franks and so much more.)

3. 6/9/77
You could really take any 3 from this Winterland run from 6/7 to 6/9 but this one wins by a nose.

4. 5/9/77
Besides what might be the best Help>Slip>Franks outside of the "One From the Vault" performance there are so many underrated gems from this show, including a stellar "Brown Eyed Women", what might be the best "Ship of Fools" ever, and just a gorgeous "Comes a Time."

5. 5/13/77

Dark horse pick here. So easy to overlook given the perfect month of May '77 shows, but this one shines with a picture perfect Scarlet>Fire --short transition jam but a kick-ass 'Fire' w/Jerry golden on the wah-wah--and all the precision in sets 1 and 2 that made '77 so beautiful. Also look for a killer "Samson" with Bobby telling the audience just before it starts that Mickey says "the first rule of Rock and Roll is drummers don't make house calls."
